9 year old launching biz for kids
Thank you for contributing to help make KidBacker's November launch and beta site a huge success! Your contribution today is a donation and will help us prove revenue and usage assumptions that are critical for the next step which is to apply for an NSF Federal Grant (focused on businesses that provide business and entrepreneurial education to K-12 students) and seek angel funding.
The site is under development with Sarasota based firm, XPlode Marketing, and we have contracted with marketing, content, and PR consultants to make our launch a huge success. We have received interest from Sarasota County School Board and will be featured as a new start up to angels in the area in a local investment newsletter in the next few weeks. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. We are on to something big. Please be a part of it!
Carly's idea: KidBacker - Your Allowance is Not Enough
Hi I'm Carly! I am launching a new business with mom to give kids and teens the opportunity to learn about business and entrepreneurship through a super cool and safe website! It's called KidBacker.
I came up with the idea of KidBacker when having brunch with my mom and my step-dad last October. I told my mom I wanted a job on the weekends to help pay for college and she looked really surprised! Really, Mom?
My step-dad, Gary, kicked her kind of hard under the table (he thought I didn't see it, lol!) and asked her what she was thinking. I guess my mom didn't think a 9 year old could work. Yeah, she was wrong!
I told my mom that I wanted to have a lemonade stand on the weekends and sell clothes too. She helped me come up with my business plan and we decided what I would sell, for how much, where I would have my stand, and how I would get people to buy things from me. She told me that I would have to buy things to make the products I would be selling and that those cost money. I would have to pay her back for helping me buy those things. Anything I had left I would keep. This is called a profit!
Because my mom has a lot of internet experience she helped me figure out how to help other kids earn and save money for college and other things they want to do using a really cool website. That's KidBacker!

Come on! Help us fund our launch! We have some awesome perks in return!
From me, the mom
Carly, my 9-year old daughter came up with the amazing idea to open the doors for all kids and teens to engage in business and entrepreneurship through crowdfunding. As a 25-year veteran from corporate America, after getting over the initial shock of being told by Carly that she wanted to work, I realized how spot on she was about supporting her dream.
(Carly and I during our first KidBacker video session)
I love and believe in the idea of KidBacker so fervently that I have left my 25 year career in corporate America to focus 100% on launching and growing KidBacker and help fill the enormous gap in education as it relates to business and entrepreneurship,
As a parent and a business leader, I am concerned about the issues our kids face after graduating from college, if they can even afford to go. The truth is, by not giving our kids an early introduction to business and entrepreneurship, we are doing them a huge disservice.
We have a very high unemployment rate for college graduates despite the fact that employers can't find skilled new entrant talent. How's that?
Employers are saying they can't find talent that has the required skills in communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and innovation. That's what business teaches us! And this is what kids can learn through their KidBacker fundraising campaigns.
Here's a great quote from a recent Wall Street Journal article covering the top of early entreprenuership:
"Some scholars argue that cultivating entrepreneurship in the very young is vital, as children are born imaginative, energetic, and willing to take risks, but lose this entrepreneurial spirit over time. Advocates say such programs make up for gaps left by an educational system that ill prepares students for a tech-centric, rapidly shifting job market."
As a parent...
Ask yourself this, do you want your kid, or any kid for that matter:
1. unprepared for the worforce?
2. unable to get a job due to lack of business and finance skills?
3. unable to make it on their own due to lack of entrepreneurial skills and spirit?
4. in debt and saddled with massive student loans?
5. And worse yet, sleeping on your couch when they are 25???
That's where KidBacker comes in.
Crowdfunding is the practice of funding a project or venture by raising many small amounts of money from a large number of people, typically via the Internet.
Typically focused on the adult market, crowdfunding is, in fact, an amazing way to open the door to millions of kids to pursue entrepreneurial type activities. It can be anything from funding a school trip or a cause they care about or, an actual business idea.
The beauty about crowdfunding is that it teaches kids collaboration, critical thinking, business, finance, responsibility and independence.
What crowdfunding for kids and teens will require is a partnership with educators, mentors and parents to help them acheive success. After time, through success and failure, trial and error, kids will learn how to do it on their own.
What KidBacker will add to the mix in addition to a completely safe environment is hands on support, training videos, tool kits. We will offer kid and teen appropriate online business, finance and crowdfunding courses complete with certification. Certification badges will be placed on fundraising pages so donors know which kids are really putting an effort in. We are there by their side to help them achieve their goals.
Other educational programs you can expect to see from KidBacker:
1. Peer-to-peer collaboration - kids can interact with one another in a safe community environment to share ideas, brainstorm and problem solve
2. Mentor Corner - using my rolodex of 1,000's of corporate level contacts, we will connect kids and teens with mentors who can help them develop business plans, answer questions, or just lend an ear to hear an idea and offer feedback
3. Business Competitions - online and live business competitions complete with judges from the business community. Competitions will be structured based on age bands.
Creating Next Gen Socially Conscious Entrepreneurs
And, as we grow, we will add a socially conscious aspect to KidBacker. Through a partnership we are currently developing with a database of non-profit and charity organizations, kids using KidBacker can opt to contribute 1% of what they raise to charities and non-profits of their choice. This gives kids the opportunity to do something amazing on top of raising money to fund their own dreams.
On KidBacker, your kids can raise money for so many things:
1. Entrepreneurial ventures
2. School Fund Raising Projects including STEM and competitions
3. Causes they care about, non-profit and charities
4. School Travel & Summer Programs
5. Tuition and other advanced education
7. Arts, Drama, Music, Photography/Video
8. Technology and other equipment
OUR STATUS TO DATE:
1. Our logo and design template has been developed
2. Our site will be launched in November (screen shots in our upcoming update.)
3. Our advisory board is in place with two more additions in the works
4. We are enlising our "First Campaigners" who will be featured during our launch
5. We have a marketing firm, a PR firm and a content strategy firm all working towards our launch
So why are we crowdfunding on GoFundMe? We will be launching no matter what but the launch is only the first step. We have a HUGE vision and we need some backing to help accelerate our growth.
We are raising money for the following:
Website Development Phase One = $ 22,500
Marketing and Launch = $10,000
Content Creation = $3,000
SSL and other web related technologies = $3,000
And, to thank you for your contributions, I will personally put in my own funds into your child's (or grandchild or neice/nephew) first KidBacker campaign as one of the perks we are offering! (super cool t-shirts too!)
Thank you for your support!

Hi there Kidbacker! Awesome idea! If kids going to raise funds for their goals, they are the ones receiving those funds? What's the legal background of the process? I'm just curious! :) Thanks and finger crossed!!! :)
