Canadians Against the B.C. Spec Tax

We are deeply grateful and extremely encouraged by the outpouring of support received since the launch of Canadians Against the B.C. Speculation Tax.
We recognize that housing affordability is a serious issue in some areas of B.C. However, the BC government’s proposed speculation tax:
· will hit B.C. residents the hardest – 2/3 of homeowners impacted will be British Columbians
· will kill jobs and hamper economic activity in BC – already, the speculation tax has halted housing projects
· will not target speculative activity, and
· will not effectively improve affordability.
As a next step, Ryan Callioux will be withdrawing the funds to a bank account specifically opened for this cause in order to transfer funds to professionals helping us with our objectives, including Gowling.
The funds raised thus far will then be used to support several grassroots initiatives aimed at generating broader awareness and pushing the BC government to rethink the proposed Speculation Tax. We are making progress, but the most effective campaign will require sustained effort and ongoing funding. The Situation
In February 2018, the B.C. government unveiled a new Speculation Tax, which will tax property owners in specific jurisdictions on homes they have often owned for years, use on a regular basis, or intend to live full-time in the years to come.
The reality is the proposed levy does little to reduce actual speculation. It does, however, harm the very communities it is supposed to protect – communities that have opened their doors to the rest of Canada and grown stronger because of it.
One of the most concerning aspects of tax is its view of all out-of-province Canadians as speculators. Canadians who may have owned their home in B.C. for decades. Canadians who plan to retire to B.C. Canadians who pay for B.C.’s education system, infrastructure, hospitals, firefighting and policing services through their municipal taxes. Canadians who purchase millions of dollars in goods and services across the province every year. These are the ‘speculators’ the new tax targets.
Ultimately, this tax will undermine confidence and set this province further apart from the rest of Canada.
The Solution
The B.C. government has already acknowledged the tax was ill-conceived, announcing changes within weeks of its introduction. However, the proposed tax still has long-term and far-reaching implications for B.C. communities, their local economies, and B.C.’s relationship with other provinces.
Which is why we’ve launched Canadians Against the B.C. Speculation Tax – a coalition of B.C. and Canadian residents urging the B.C. government to rethink this misguided tax before it does irreparable harm. We’re doing this by raising awareness around the proposed tax and its consequences, and by providing a platform for Canadians from all provinces to express their concerns to the B.C. government.
And we need your help.
The Ask
For this coalition to make a meaningful impact, we need your support. Funds raised will help launch and support a public advocacy campaign to pressure the government to withdraw the Speculation Tax. Should the government refuse to listen to the growing number of Canadians who believe this policy is unjust, we are preparing to bring a class action law suit. Help us make sure the B.C.
