Brantford Food Forest Naturally Connected formed in 2017 with the goal of planting organic food forests in the city of Brantford. We are a community-led group. Our plan is to collectively grow fruits, nuts, vegetables, and herbs for the community, at no cost to the community, in city parks.
We would like to plant our first project in Parson’s Park beginning with a ceremonial tree planting in September. The planting will be completed by 2020.
The first project will be a half-acre in size and will allow community members to participate in growing healthy food. The garden will also provide space for outdoor gatherings and educational purposes and will foster collaboration. We anticipate that this space will also support opportunities for citizen science and youth empowerment among many other activities.
Our goal is to plant and maintain the food forest at no cost to the city or to any resident. Any member of the community can avail themselves of the produce, no questions and no restrictions or requirements beyond asking people to only take what they actually will use (to reduce food waste).
The garden will be fully accessible and will include a picnic area, outdoor seating and gazebo (theatre-style), community composting, an outhouse or portapotty, a dedicated space under the trees for quiet contemplation, and raised beds.
The funds raised through this campaign will go towards:
• Hiring Wildcraft Permaculture to create the design for the first food forest,
• Enabling community members to participate in planning meetings ($ for childcare and transportation),
• Signage,
• Ground breaking ceremony & tree planting.
• And more …
We have just initiated a partnership with the Kinsmen Club for the purposes of fundraising (so we can apply for grants and ask for corporate donations). To date, we have received pledges of approximately $300 from individuals for the purchase of trees for the food forest. One community member has been growing gooseberries and blackberries for the food forest.
The City of Brantford’s Parks and Recreation Department will recommend that city council support our project. We anticipate receiving city approval at the end of July 2018.
Donations can be made in any amount - please consider supporting this great initiative!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your help in getting this project off the ground. We are truly grateful for your support now and in the future - here's to many fruitful growing seasons to come!
