Stop Asian Hate

Anti-Asian racism has a long history in Canada. COVID-19 has fueled racist rhetoric, resulting in a year of escalated violence against the Asian diaspora in Canada. There have been over 1,500 reports of racist attacks across Canada, since March 2020.

It’s time for Canada to act. Join the #StopAsianHate movement to help end the pandemic of racism in Canada.

A year of racist attacks: surge in anti-Asian hate crimes in Canada

According to data collected and analyzed by Project 1907 and the Chinese Canadian National Council Toronto Chapter, Canada has a higher number of anti-Asian racism reports per capita than the United States. The incidences reported per capita in Canada are double those reported in the United States.

British Columbia has the most reported incidents per capita of any sub-national region in North America, followed by California, New York, and Ontario. References: Project 1907 and Elimin8hate, US Stop AAPI Hate and country census data.

Ontario and British Columbia have the highest number of incidents, reporting 46% and 31%, respectively.

Vancouver has the most reported incidents per capita of any city in Canada, followed by Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, and Calgary.

Project 1907 is situated on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

CCNCTO and CCNC-SJ are located on the traditional territories of many First Nations including the Anishnaabek, Haudenosaunee, Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit River.

We are grateful for the tremendous labour and leadership of Indigenous peoples in the racial justice movement.

As the country mourns the discovery of the remains of 215 Indigenous children at the site of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School on Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc territory, we stand with Indigenous communities and residential school survivors fighting for justice, sovereignty and human rights. We encourage all settlers to review the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and support Indigenous-led organizations including the Indian Residential School Survivors Society. A helpline for residential school survivors can be reached at: 1-866-925-4419.
