UVIC 5 Days for the Homeless

5 Days is a national campaign that takes place across 20 participating Universities. The mission of the campaign is to raise awareness about homelessness and collect monetary donations for a local charity. This year, on behalf of UVic Commerce Students' Society, we are raising money for Kiwanis Emergency Youth Shelter (KEYS) supported by the Victoria Youth Empowerment Society.

Youth homelessness is a major issue in Canada. Homelessness affects around 40,000 youth per year across Canada, with 1 in 5 (20%) shelter users being a youth. Homeless youth often face much higher difficulties in finding safe, suitable housing after homelessness than adults, given the lack of supports existing and the greater need for long-term goals and solutions when working with youth.

Kiwanis Emergency Youth Shelter (KEYS) was the first home in BC to address the specific needs of young people age 13 to 18. Typically, emergency shelters like Streetlink and Sandi Merriman House for women will only take in youth aged 18 or older. Without KEYS, teens might end up on the street, or remain in unsafe situations in their homes. Instead, they are provided with a safe bed at night, good home cooking, chores to perform - and youth care workers skilled in recognizing the language and behaviour of youth that support positive change. Staff bring parents, guardians, social workers, and crisis intervention teams together to help youth chart a new course.

Our 5 Days campaign will occur for the duration of the month of March. Given the current COVID-19 situation, the campaign will run primarily virtually, with select in-person activities the community can participate in. 30 participants will be completing challenges geared towards raising funds and awareness for youth homelessness through 5 Days throughout the month. These will include donating canned goods, completing a 5k run or walk, and much more. Internally, the CSS and our students will be tasked with raising funds ourselves as well.

It goes without saying that this year has been difficult to cultivate involvement and awareness due to the pandemic. Despite this, the Commerce Students' Society is optimistic and is planning 5 days this year with a goal of $5000 in donations.
