Supporting Mannan Tribal Community via FoodBank

Hi everyone! My name is Caitlin, I am a 21 year old undergraduate student at Ryerson University. In my first year I spent time in rural Kerala, India with a grassroots organization YearOutIndia (YOI). It is an entirely volunteer run organization with a mission to improve sanitation infrastructure and overall living conditions through construction, medical, and educational programs. This gofundme (in more detail below) will provide the Mannan Tribal Community with groceries during this strenuous time.

What’s the situation?

The Mannan Tribal community has been hit hard during the COVID-19 pandemic; by the first wave in March 2020 and again in the second wave of April 2021.   This is a community of 126 families living high in the Western Ghat Mountains as one of the only two tribal communities recognized by the Indian government.  Living in their village Kozhimala the Mannan men and women are predominantly  daily wage workers and the raging pandemic has completely dissipated  any opportunity to access employment or earnings. This has left families struggling to provide food for their loved ones. As COVID-19 spreads rapidly throughout India seeking work outside of their region is a huge risk to personal and community safety. Due to lack of testing outside of urban centres, the true number of Covid-19 cases is unknown.  The rural location and lack of work creates disproportionate challenges to the community to provide food for families.

What can we do?

The goal is to raise $5,000 to provide $35 worth of groceries per family per month; until they are able to get back into the workforce. These funds will be used to buy rice, oil, vegetables and other basic items required  feed a family of 4-5. These supplies  will be bought through the local shop in a near by village to ensure this food provider can also stay active. Keeping this essential business local will support the community as a whole.

This initiative will make a HUGE difference in these families lives and the community as a whole.

The people I met in Kerala were some of the kindest, most generous people I have ever met. Thank you for taking the time to read this donation page and we wholeheartedly appreciate any support you are able to give.

Even the smallest donation makes a difference!

*The funds will not be given in cash to these families but used to buy and provide the items to them. Please visit YOI’s website  to find out more about the organization as a whole.
