Help Anarres Through The Toronto Lockdown

Since the pandemic began, Anarres has experienced a virtually complete loss of workshop, event and consultation fees. The winter lockdown has reduced sales to the point that I have been forced to lay off three Anarres people, from full hours to less than half time work, after placing most Apprentices and volunteers on leave for safety reasons.  Since the pandemic began, I have paid myself minimally and my savings have dwindled. I see that without support, Anarres will soon no longer be viable.

On top of the loss of income, expenses have skyrocketed since March 2020.

As an apothecary selling essential goods, we have been open throughout the COVID-19 pandemic began and have had to make many changes to our way of working to make sure everyone is safe and we are meeting all the guidelines.

In order to keep our storefront and operations safe, we've needed to:

* Put vulnerable Apprentices and Work Exchangers on Leaves of Absence

* Replace work exchanged labour with paid work (a great, but costly change)

* Pay for a wide range of new/or extra expenses (hundreds of dollars a month in electricity to run our heated/cooled rooftop ventilation and air exchange, PPE & supplies for workers and shoppers, UVB and Level 13 HEPA air filtration & sanitation, escalated freight and insurance costs…)

The government has been of no real help.

We have not qualified for a government loan or for most government subsidies because businesses that remain open are often excluded, and because the methods used to calculate need do not account for increased expenses. We have also been denied assistance because Anarres's business structure does not allow us to provide business identity documents that some granters have required. I’ve tried it all, and I'll keep trying, but at present, there is no significant financial help for Anarres. If you are an expert grant writer and knowledgable about COVID funds for small businesses, and have some time on your hands, please email me if you feel you can help do some of the leg work.

I am taking a different approach to running this gofundme by offering you a Gift Certificate in exchange for all donations, just like countries raise capital during tough times by selling savings bonds. Consider it an advance,  an investment in the future of Anarres, and an investment in your health and DIY projects. You can redeem your Saving Anarres Bond for products, consultations or workshops in the future. When you email me a request, I'll send you a Saving Anarres Bond Gift Certificate for the value of your contribution. Consider it a transferable forever prepayment for whatever you might need from us any time from now on.  If you want your donation to be a gift just let me know that, too.

You’ll have my heartfelt gratitude either way!

I appreciate the numerous offers for personal loans but don't feel good about accepting money that I cannot guarantee I can pay back.... but the many wonderful products and services in my shop I CAN guarantee! I know that regardless of what the future brings, I will be able to give you something you want or need, from a workshop, a private lesson, to water purification, natural contraception, incenses, perfumes or candles, zero waste housewares, or custom or off the shelf body care products!
