The Advocacy group was formed by concerned residents when they became aware of a proposal that would see the infill of a significant portion of the Long Pond harbour. We assembled a team of individuals that have donated their time and their expertise to help create awareness within the community at large and with all levels of government.
We must now move to the next level.
Long Pond is an estuary, as defined by experts. It supports various species of fish, shellfish, aquatic plants and animals. This body of water provides vital nesting, breeding and feeding habitats for many other species. It is also a well utilized harbour, home to both commercial and recreational boaters.
We feel strongly that if allowed to move forward, this project will have significant long-term negative impacts on the entire coastal region of Long Pond. The area is designated as a high vulnerability flood zone and is susceptible to storm surges, ice build up and flooding.
In 2018, the Long Pond Harbour Authority (LPHA) with the lobby and support of the Council of the Town of Conception Bay South (CBS), sold 12 acres of “land under the water” in the Long Pond estuary to a private for-profit company for $1.
This area was divested in 2013 to the LPHA by the Federal Government and placed under a monitoring program with specific guidelines to ensure proper ongoing governance for all users. The LPHA was also bestowed $12.6 million to maintain and upkeep the harbour’s infrastructure.
At the urging of Town Council, the area was released from the Federal Government’s monitoring program without any input or knowledge by CBS residents.
We have been aggrieved by the lack of public notice and public consultation. Indeed, public trust has been compromised.
Decisions taken today must be made with a concern for their impact tomorrow. We must strive to carefully balance the development of waterways and coastal areas with the protection of these natural and sensitive ecosystems. Economic development can not come at the cost of good environmental stewardship and sustainability.
Please help save the Long Pond estuary!
It is a shared resource and protecting it must be a shared priority among all levels of government, the private sector, communities, and individual citizens. Your donations are needed and appreciated - 100% of the money collected will be applied against legal fees. Any unused funds will be directed to a CBS registered charity, with input from you, the members of the Advocacy for the Responsible Development of Long Pond.
