Asmara Bellydance Initiative

Asmara has many meanings worldwide. In Arabic, it describes a Black or Nubian Woman. In Bali it means love. In Ethiopian, it describes women who have come together. Asmara is also the capitol of Eritrea.

About the Asmara Belly Dance Initiative:

We are belly dancers of color who want to facilitate and fund festivals that celebrate belly dancers from the diaspora. Our mission is to inspire dancers to embrace their inner and outer beauty and celebrate themselves through performance and self-expression. We do not host competitions but rather stage shows, teaching opportunities and panel discussions.

Our goal is to host a globally acclaimed belly dance festival in 2021.

We promise to engage in a co-design framework in which the community we desire to serve can tell us how they best see fit to do so! Bylaws, rules, code of conduct, etc, will all be determined by the participants themselves. We feel it is mandatory to remain accountable throughout this process and ensure transparency the entire way.

Dancers from all walks of life are invited to attend our festival, but priority will be given to those who identify as POC (people of color).

This event will provide subsidy for low-income, aspiring performers. It will also create teaching opportunities for new instructors. We will hire top of line musicians and artists from around the world in an effort to promote the opportunity to dance to live music for those who may not have otherwise had the chance.

Our guild is made of 6 women of color who are working belly dancers. Together they manage:

Inclusion, Accountability, Accessibility & Ethical Operations - Jaicyea Smith

Web Design & Graphics - Michelle Hasna

Media, Marketing, Customer & Client Relations - Sabia Nayeli

Travel, Transportation, Hotel Event Planning & Management - Khadijah Smith

Accounting, Fundraising, Festival Sales & Subsidy Programs - Maiea Williams

Our vision is to host an annual festival that brings us all together (Location: TBD by YOU!). A place where Black and brown belly dancers can network, connect and support one another. Growing our community means growing our economy! Show your support and donate to our movement today! Here's what the money will go towards:
