On December 12, 2020 Brian’s parents took him to the IWK emergency department as Brian had developed a fever. It was at that time that bloodwork was completed and doctors became concerned. As such, Brian was admitted that evening. Over the next several days, numerous tests were completed as the doctors searched for answers.
At just two months old, Brian was diagnosed with Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a very rare disorder of the body’s defense system. This disorder causes the body’s normal infection-fighting process to go out of control. Instead of fighting invading cells from infection, the immune system begins to attack the body’s normal cells.
Brian has been receiving treatment at the IWK hospital, including steroids and chemotherapy, to help quiet his immune system. Unfortunately, this treatment alone will not cure Brian’s HLH. Brian will require a bone marrow transplant. Brian and his parents will be traveling to Toronto Sickkids hospital in approximately one month where Brian will receive this life-saving transplant.
Brian needs both of his parents with him right now and he has a long journey ahead. We have decided to start this fundraiser as a means to help alleviate financial strain this journey may entail. Brian’s parents have been advised that Brian will be at the Toronto Sickkids hospital for a minimum of 100 days. After that, Brian will be considered immunocompromised for a year while his immune system rebuilds.
Appreciated, just as much as any monetary donation, are prayers for Brian.
