Down North Pizza

Please Support the “Everybody Eats” Down North Pizza Fundraiser

We are seeking to raise $100,000 for Down North Pizza, a mission-led neighborhood pizza joint. We exclusively employ formerly incarcerated individuals while providing culinary career opportunities at a fair wage and with an equitable workplace.

We self-funded the restaurant purchase and build out, now we are seeking help financing the mission to get the doors open.

Launching a fundraiser gives us the opportunity to circumvent some of the issues we’ve faced as new Black restaurateurs, such as a disproportionate lack of access to working business capital and loans.

Support the opening of our shop in Dec 2020 by donating a pie through our "Everybody Eats" virtual fundraiser.

Our Mission

Down North Pizza aspires to be the North Star for for-profit businesses that are committed to uplifting the communities they serve.

Truly living up to the mantra “everybody eats." Down North Pizza is a mission-led for-profit restaurant that will provide excellent food and quality customer service to North Philadelphia. Our mission is to reduce recidivism through economic empowerment and opportunity. Fully embracing the notion of family-style, Down North Pizza sources, serves and hires locally.  Put simply, “everybody eats.”

Our highest vision is that this restaurant will not only serve, feed and nourish our neighbors but also engage and inspire the community through every slice.

The Fundraiser- “Everybody Eats”

When you make a donation to the “Everybody Eats” virtual fundraiser it will support the opening of Down North Pizza and support local Philly community organizations. Through your donation, you can “buy” virtual pizzas at the *suggested* donation of $20 or more (however, every amount no matter how small is welcome).  During the week of Thanksgiving we will donate and deliver the pizzas to community organizations in the Philadelphia area,  to ensure “everybody eats” this holiday season.

The first 100 ppl to contribute $250 or more to this project will receive a gratitude gift of limited-edition merch. Our aim is to “sell” 100 virtual pizzas per day over the course of Black Restaurant Week and through the end of November—in an effort to put a significant dent in our target goal of $100,000 in donations.  The funds raised will help cover the restaurant’s operating costs, fair wages for employees as well as the costs to house Down North Pizza staff in free fully equipped and furnished apartments.

About Down North Pizza

Imagine a pizza joint filled with the same fun and energy of a loving family dinner table.  A space filled with plenty of culture,  joy and laughter to go around.

Down North Pizza will serve comfort classics such square pizza pies and slices, wings, salads, fries and shakes.  The pies and slices will feature a few more creative topping options than the usual pizza joint such as collard green pesto, short ribs and spicy crab. Giving a nod to Chef Evans’ influences, which include indulgent Southern style cooking.  Classic favorites such as pepperoni, sausage, cheese or healthy options (such as vegan and vegetarian), will also be on the menu.

Down North Pizza is scheduled to open in December 2020 in North Philly, in the city’s Strawberry Mansion neighborhood, at 2804 Lehigh Avenue.

A message from Chef Kurt Evans

Down North Pizza is a continuation of a dream to use my culinary skills for activism.  As a chef, artist and activist--I have long held a passion for honoring the culture through food, education and creating protected spaces to celebrate all of these things.

We live by the mantra “everybody eats” and when it comes to real change, we refuse to leave our neighborhoods behind. With your support, we will bring our dream to fruition and in turn uplift the North Philly neighborhood of Strawberry Mansions.

Thank you for your support.
