I am Dr. Kate Kingsbury
, an Oxford University PhD, please help me to raise money to conduct the research necessary to write a BOOK on SANTA MUERTE VENERATION AS FEMALE EMPOWERMENT. This book already has potential publishers, all that is needed is funding for research. I've already travelled to Mexico twice to start research but could not afford to stay long enough to complete my fieldwork, please help me return to Oaxaca. I hope, in the future, to potentially expand this project into one that looks at female Oaxacan migrants residing in Canada and the USA who venerate la Santa.
If you sponsor this book, your name will be included in the acknowledgements section out of gratitude.
If you donate $200 or more, I will personally send you a signed and dedicated free copy of the book.
Giving back: I'll be giving back and doing charity work during my research as I will liaise with an NGO
working with women in Mexico, against gendered violence, which is a severe problem. I have experience working for NGOS since I already work for free for this one
and was invited to be a board member due to my service.
*** BOOK PROJECT
The oldest known prayer to Santa Muerte was one specifically for WOMEN to act against cheating men and dates back many decades.
Today still WOMEN across the Americas (from Mexico to Chicago) are turning to SANTA MUERTE as a source of empowerment, whether it is invoking her in prayer and ritual to ask her to bless their endeavours, or starting prayer groups that bring together female devotees in worship or perhaps running a small business out of their shrine to support themselves and their family. The Saint of Death, unlike the Virgin Mary who is meek and mild, is known to be a caring mother to devotees, granting them favours in business and love, but equally Santa Muerte is a wrathful, demanding figure who can be turned to not just for love but also for vengeance against those who have harmed or wronged women.
In a world where women are continually fighting injustices: from economic exploitation, gendered violence and abuse, as the #metoo movement has highlighted, women need new modes of empowerment. Santa Muerte reflects not only their needs but also their characters, depicting the many facets of the female persona and innumerable challenges that women face on a daily basis.
This book will counter claims in the media that Santa Muerte is just a 'narcosaint', appealed to by male drug dealers. It will shed light on a population that is often ignored, due to their gender: WOMEN. In chapters that look at diverse topics, from the mystical -Santa Muerte rituals, dreams and apparitions - to more real world stories such as the tale of an expanding shrine in Pochutla, Mexico that led one woman to go from an unknown local devotee to famous and powerful in the region due to her impressive, ever-expanding public Santa Muerte temple.
My book will look at women in Mexico, but also in the U.S.A and their relationship with Santa Muerte as I explore how women turn to the Skeleton Saint for empowerment, and how she represents their dreams, their challenges and reflects in her mythology and iconography, their lifestories.
Your money will pay for:
-flight from Canada to Mexico
- accommodation in Mexico, and for a total of 6-8 months of research
- food during 6-8 months during research
- transportation: it will be necessary to hire a car as in the rural areas where I work that is the only way to get around
- miscellaneous: sometimes buying a coffee for a devotee to get them to open up about devotion or other expenses such as this, crop up...
