Processing the recent rise in violence against Black bodies in a time where we have all been in isolation due to COVID-19 has been extremely difficult. As a meditation teacher & wellness facilitator I have personally witnessed a decline in the overall wellness of members of the Black Community here in Vancouver.
I am currently organizing a two day wellness retreat called Dark Before the Dawn, which will run August 31-Sept 2, 2020 in response to this.

The focus of this retreat is to connect Black communities members with local traditional wisdom holders, and wellness professionals that can support them in processing grief related to ongoing systemic violence, including police brutality. In addition the retreat will connect attendees to professionals who can provide ongoing support in achieving wellness as we collectively move to a more just, kind, and equitable world.

While I have paid out of my own pocket to book Abundance Farms to host this retreat, I know my efforts to create equality here in the wellness community won’t reach their maximum effectiveness unless we have the backing of the entire community. That’s why I’m inviting you to join me in allyship.

There are MANY ways to show up:
In order to keep this retreat financially accessible to a group already seeking equity I am asking attendees to just pay $50 for their two day stay - this includes their six afro-vegan meals over the two days. That said, the cost of the actual retreat is higher and I'm asking allies and accomplices to sponsor the remaining $100 per attendee to cover their costs.

Alternatively, I would love to be able to pay each Black facilitator for their time to come out and share their healing work with the community. A $200 donation would sponsor a wellness facilitator at the event.

The total cost of renting this space was $800, which I have paid out of the pocket, and the insurance to run the event is $350, which I have also paid out of pocket, but I would love to be able to put this on without going into the red since it's also taking up so much of my time and energy to organize it.

I'd love to put together some self care packages for attendees, so if you have a wellness product you'd like to contribute towards that please let me know.

Lastly, I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to run a shuttle from Vancouver to Agassiz for attendees who have no other way of getting to and from the retreat from the city. The cost of this would be roughly $1500. So funds would also be used towards a shuttle.

Black lives matter. I know you know this, and share my sentiments when I say there is nothing I want more than for the Black community to know their lives do matter, and that their wellness matters too.

Together we can begin to heal this wound.
