2020 has been a crazy year but things went for the worst on October 12, 2020. Nida, my sister-in-law and mother of two children (2-year-old and 11-year-old), received the most devastating news: she was diagnosed with Stage 4 Peritoneal Cancer, a rare type of cancer that affects the abdomen. The prognosis is grim and the battle to fight this cancer will be hard but your assistance can help.
Nida recently underwent a 11-hour surgery where her uterus, ovaries, spleen, cervix and gallbladder were removed, an area of her liver trimmed, and her colon cut and rejoined with a pipe. Her daily functioning has been severely impacted, and she has to pass her stool with an external stoma bag for the next 9 months. In the following 8 months, she will be receiving 9 sessions of chemotherapy, followed by another surgery. Due to COVID and Nida’s severely compromised immune system, the family has access to very limited assistance and her children are not physically attending school or daycare.
Nida had to become the financial backbone of this family after my brother was diagnosed with vertebral artery dissection in 2016. In addition, she and her husband are contract employees with no health insurance benefits. This means that almost all medication must be paid by them personally. With Nida’s loss of her ability to work and my brother’s limited capacity to do so, the family’s financial situation is precarious. Therefore, I am seeking your kind-hearted support on their behalf. Until Nida recovers and starts working again, I have set the goal for $60,000 which would cover at home child care and living expenses as well as expenses related to post-surgery recovery, dietary restrictions, and medication not covered by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan.
Nida keeps a brave front for the children and is trying to be positive. Relieving them of the financial stress can help the family focus on the recovery and help give emotional support to the children. If you could donate any amount – small or big – and/or share this page with your social network, you can assist Nida’s family during this difficult period.
We are grateful for your time, generosity and prayers.
