On Saturday afternoon driving home from a roller skating class with their friend, our dear Chelsea experienced a medical emergency at the wheel and lost consciousness. Their friend reached for the steering wheel from the passenger seat and managed to direct the car away from oncoming traffic. The two drifted toward the sidewalk and slammed into a lamp post totalling their Pontiac Vibe.
Two passersby pulled Chelsea out of the driver's seat and performed CPR in the middle of Oak Street until an ambulance arrived at the scene. Chelsea's heart had stopped beating normally. After 20 minutes of chest compressions and several broken ribs, emergency medical technicians used an electric defibrillator to stabilise their heartbeat, placed them on a stretcher and rushed them to the emergency room at Vancouver General Hospital.
In the ER Chelsea was triaged and immediately placed in the trauma bay, sedated and placed on a ventilator. While there were no signs of injury from the car accident, the medical team has not yet been able to determine the cause of the medical emergency.
Why Chelsea Needs Your Support:
Like so many independent artists, Chelsea does not have access to sick pay or extended benefits and the restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have had a hard impact on their income. Chelsea's parents live far away across the country and across the border.
Friends and family are coming together to care for Chelsea on the hard road of recovery ahead. As more tests and examinations are underway, more medical circumstances will emerge and we want to ensure they can receive all the physical and mental care needed to make a full recovery and have the financial resources to take care of any unforeseen costs.
We're seeking community support to help with the costs associated with recovery, as well as to partially make up for lost income, their totalled vehicle, and cover living expenses like rent, hydro, phone bills, food, business expenses, care for their beloved cat Tuxo, long-term physiotherapy as well as flying their mother into town to be with Chelsea during this difficult time.
If you have been blessed with Chelsea's presence on and off stage, you have felt their phenomenal care and love for the people in their life. They have a deep sense of justice and are fiercely protective over folks, especially those who are made vulnerable in community. Chelsea's playfulness, silliness, warmth and generosity are fundamental to their personality. They take every opportunity to build up others, and show love to those around them. Now we have a chance to rally around Chelsea, and circle them in the kind of love and care they continually offer us all.
**While our instinct in this moment may be to shower Chelsea with messages of love, and deliveries of treats, as Chelsea is in the most critical moments of their healing process, what they need most at this moment is rest and access to resources. We ask that folks respect the need for boundaries around healing, and offer Chelsea the space to make a successful and full recovery. Messages of support are welcome and can be shared here: “lovingupchelsea[at]gmail.com” for Chelsea to read when they are ready.**
Please give what you can and support the campaign by sharing it widely.
