Sam was a happy 13-year-old kid when his life took a devastating turn.
Unbeknownst to his parents, Sam had been experiencing a mysterious mass in his pelvis for weeks. When he finally confessed his concern to his parents, they took him to the hospital for a checkup.
Sam and his parents entered the doctor’s room where the doctor performed some tests. He noticed the lump in his pelvic area and took his mom and dad aside, to talk to them in private.
The word “cancer” came from the doctor’s mouth and Sam’s parents were thrust into their worst nightmare. “How could this be?” his mom asked. “We have no family history of cancer.”
Nobody thinks cancer will happen to them … until it does.
When Sam’s mom asked for clarification, the doctor patiently explained available procedures: surgery and chemotherapy, the traditional weapons doctors use to battle mankind’s worst enemy. Both were used on Sam’s cancer, and the treatments sent his cancer into remission a year later.
But in late April 2020, his parents received additional devastating news: Sam’s tumor was back, and it had metastasized to his lungs and pelvic bone. Ever since, Sam has kept his hope strong while going through extremely difficult medical procedures.
His parents are working employees and their life savings have been spent on cancer treatments to save their only child. Several of the available options (chemoembolization and Carbon Ion radiation therapy) weren’t provided (or aren’t available) in Canada, so Sam’s family took multiple trips to Europe to receive these treatments.
To date, the family has spent about $200,000 on cancer treatments. There is a promising cancer trial that isn’t covered by Canadian healthcare. It costs between $200 – 250K.
Sam’s parents need your help to keep their child alive.
With your help, Sam will survive this nightmare, live like other teens, and one day reach his dream of becoming a pharmacologist to help other people battling cancer.
Sam is a friendly, happy, adventurous 16-year-old with big plans for his future. He says, “I also want to explore the world and share my experiences with others.”
Instead of spending the vast majority of his teenage years the way most teenagers do, Sam has been, and he continues, battling an adversary that no parent ever wants their child to face. His father explains, “It wears you down, soaks your pillow with tears at night, and makes you feel desperate to find a way to protect and save your child. It is agony. Our boy is our chief joy, but not just ours. He lights up the life of everyone who knows him. He’s a wonderful human being.”
Receiving cures from another country is extremely expensive due to travel costs and the expense of the treatments. Sam’s family has nearly exhausted their funds, but Sam’s tumor isn’t yet defeated. It will take just a couple more steps to save his life, but those steps will only be possible with your help.
Every donation, large and small, will bring Sam closer to the family’s goal of saving his life.
We truly need your help now.
