The risk of educating the general public and city councillors about the realities of homelessness is one Charles and his group were willing to bear. After Charles shared his story January 23rd, he suffered increased harassment at his encampment and had his housing allowance cut. He had to survive the winter on just over $300 per month. We are thankful for Charles’ bravery, but do not feel it’s fair for him to shoulder the burden of his going public alone.
Despite being aware of Charles’ situation since November 2020, Home Base Housing had not been able to offer them an alternate option. There is no affordable housing available, there is no appropriate shelter available. Like many others, Charles and his group were stuck in the cold.
Volunteers have been doing their best to provide those living outside with winter survival equipment. But propane heaters and tents have limitations as temperatures plummet. It was clear from City of Kingston Budget deliberations that no solution will be coming to save people without homes from freezing to death.
Our community of volunteers are therefore pleading with the public to help us bring people in from the cold. All monies donated will be used to house people in hotel rooms or private options until we can find permanent housing solutions. We believe in transparency, a full accounting of how funds are distributed is available to all donors.
