Our beautiful and courageous daughter, Karin Khuong, passed away October 4th, 2020 at 16 years old. Karin loved life, family, school and sports. Although she played all sports, basketball was her passion. On the court she was happy, creative, and determined. She loved to compete and our family loved watching her perform. She began playing at Castle Park Elementary, where she earned the nickname 2K, and later for club teams Poco Galaxy and VK Basketball. Karin was diagnosed with stage 4 rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), a soft-tissue childhood cancer, in Sept. 2018. The community rallied around her and she held off the disease long enough to return to practice and to play in games for Terry Fox Secondary School. She cheered on her teammates during the 2018-19 season when Terry Fox went 35-0 and won the British Columbia junior girls’ basketball championship. In 2019-20, she was able to step on the court for the Ravens in the provincial championship to a thunderous applause by the fans. It was the last time she put on the Terry Fox uniform. These are two moments we will hold forever in our hearts.
Karin and our family made beautiful friendships in the basketball and school communities and we are forever grateful to the teachers, coaches and teammates who inspired her everyday. The Terry Fox community welcomed Karin in grade 9 and surrounded her with love when she needed it most; we will be forever grateful to the students and staff for sharing in our daughter's beautiful life.
To honour Karin's spirit and the joy she received playing sports in Port Coquitlam we are creating the Karin Khuong (2K) Memorial Scholarship. Our goal is to raise $20,000 so we can award $2,000 in scholarships each year to student-athletes for the next 10 years. In this way we will be honouring our 2K by awarding $2k for the same number of years that Karin was on the court playing hoops. $2K for 10 years.
Karin's goal was to play basketball at Simon Fraser, and with her determination, we know she would have achieved it. Now she is going to assist others students chase their dreams. It's our way of saying thank you for being part of our lives. We are asking our friends to support our scholarship rather than send flowers. If your daughter or family was touched by Karin's spirit, please consider helping us pay it forward.
