Who Are We?

We are a team of Edmonton’s frontline medical professionals and industrial designers, engineers and computer scientists from the University of Alberta. Our team usually works together to print 3D Heart models for educational purposes. Here’s a link to some work we have done in the past...

With the COVID-19 crisis, we are pivoting our efforts to ensure Alberta’s healthcare providers at the front lines continue to be well protected. While Alberta Health Services has done an incredible job at stocking large amounts of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), we currently rely on disposable PPE and must be prepared should our system be overwhelmed. This strategy is supported by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/hcp/ppe-strategy/eye-protection.html

What Are We Doing?

Our team of experts have been working together to design and manufacture PPE that is reusable, safe, comfortable and meets Health Canada's standards. We are collaborating with a local business, Karma Machining & Manufacturing, the U of A and the Alberta maker community to maximize our production capabilities.

Face shields provide crucial protection to providers who are caring for patients with COVID-19. We are currently working on 3D printing reusable face shields approved for use by the National Institute of Health.

Reusable face shields are already being widely used by medical professionals in other parts of Canada and all over the world. Each shield takes approximately 2.5 hours to print and a few minutes to assemble. We are working with the appropriate people to ensure they meet infection control standards and can be sanitized effectively. Below is a photo of Amy, a nurse at the Stollery trying out one of our prototypes.

How Can You Help?

1. Donate Funds: Each face shield costs $12 in materials and every dollar counts towards meeting our goal.
2. Print Face Shields at Home: Have access to a 3D printer? Get in touch with us about joining our team or join our Facebook group for up to date information. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1045625562473542/
3. Donate Materials: We are in need of filament (PETG, ABS, PLA). Get in touch with us if you have access to these materials and would like to donate them.
4. Share Our Message: Help us get the word out and reach more people.

How will your donations be used?

In discussions with the University of Alberta and Alberta Health Services, funds will be withdrawn into a University Hospital Foundation account and used to:

- Purchase materials needed to produce PPE (filament, PETG sheets, elastic, foam, silicone, acrylic)
- Ship products to recipients located more than a 1-hour drive from Edmonton

We hope you will join our effort to #FlattenTheCurve and put an end this pandemic, by protecting the ones who will be caring for us on the front lines.
