Maggie- A fighter's instinct

This is a love story, between my good friend Mary Kay Thurston, (all her close friends call her Perk), and her dog Maggie.  It has a tragic ending. Maggie was adopted by Perk about a year ago. When Maggie was found, she was lying at the side of a road somewhere outside Sugarland Texas by a sheriff. She was very advanced in her pregnancy.  The sheriff took her to the local "Save our strays" shelter; 2 days later she delivered 11 puppies.  8 weeks later all 11 puppies were adopted by a pet store.

Perk fell in love with her when she heard her story. She imagined her walking along the highway,  in the extreme heat and so so pregnant. Then, Perk felt heartbroken for her to lose all her puppies in one day, yet no one adopted her. One of the shelter workers kept her for 6 months, waiting for the perfect owner to take her home.

Maggie and Perk were a perfect match, she went to a beautiful riverside home in Ladner with Perk and her husband Jeff.  Maggie went to work everyday  with Perk to BCIT, the students and faculty loved her.  She was so sweet!  Maggie made people smile, she brought joy to everyone who met her.

Then the unbelievable happened.

On Saturday  morning June 13th, Perk was out for a walk on the dike near her home.  At the end of the dike is a hobby farm; we would often stop and look at the different animals contained in a variety of pens.  Llamas, a donkey, a pig, and 2 big dogs.  On this day one of the animals, a goat, was very agitated and, after much to do, was able to get enough height and jumped over the fence and escaped.

Perk wanted to let the owner know the goat had escaped, so she walked all the way around and entered the long driveway towards the farmhouse.  Maggie was on her leash, and she felt it was best to leash her to the fence post while she went down the road towards the house.

That is when it happened.

2 huge dogs came charging out , barking and jumping around Perk. Then, the dogs saw Maggie. The charged up to Maggie and attacked her.  Perk forced herself in between the dogs trying to get them off Maggie.  Maggie suffered multiple injuries and puncture wounds and a fractured leg.

Maggie was taken to the Langley Veterinary Hospital. The team fought so valiantly to save her life,  giving her updates all hours of the day and night, one time calling at 2 am with good news she had pulled through surgery.  They are an incredible medical team, so much skill and compassion. Maggie had numerous operations, spending hours in surgery, she fought through and made it through all of them , she was such a fighter.

But, on Monday June 15th, Maggie went into cardiac arrest and passed away. So so tragic and sad.  Maggie you were such a sweet sweet girl.  Rest in Peace..

But now Perk has around $23,000 in Vet bills on her Visa cards.  If you are touched by this story and feel you would like to help out, please donate to help cover the costs.  Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Please feel free to share on your social media sites or  email to people that know Perk.
