My 20 Year Cancerversary

Hi everyone,

October 6, 2000 was the day that changed my life and my family’s life forever. I was diagnosed with Leukemia (ALL) and endured chemotherapy for 5 grueling years. Having a life-threatening disease at 12 years old defies our very definition of what ought to be...youth and health are supposed to be synonymous. I was forced to pause my life at a time when my peers were just beginning theirs...going to parties, traveling, and falling in love. As a young cancer patient, it was difficult to see ahead, I didn't know what the future held...I just knew I wanted to be there.

Every day I am reminded how lucky I am to still be alive and sometimes I can’t believe it. On the days that I feel down, I frequently think back to those times when I didn’t even know if I would survive my next round of chemo.

I'll always remember the strangers that brought kids gifts to the hospital during Christmas time, just to see us smile. I told my parents that I would do the same as soon as I was better...and I've kept that promise. Each year I would gather my savings and buy gift cards for all the kids in the unit that I used to stay in. It broke my heart each year when I would find out how many kids were there (always hoping that one day it will be zero). As I'm continuously looking to find ways to fight this horrible disease, I’ve decided once again to raise money for The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, where I was treated and ultimately cured. I survived that brutal battle for a reason, and I want to take full advantage of being here on Earth to help make a change for other kids and teens fighting cancer.

We all know someone who is battling this disease, or worse, has lost someone to it – so I am dedicating my efforts to them. Thank you in advance for your thoughtfulness and generosity, you’re truly making a difference in medical research and the lives of those affected by cancer.
