Pride Flags Across Halton

In April, the Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB) voted against flying the pride flag at their school buildings.

Through their attempt to stop the pride flag from being flown, the HCDSB has shown that they do not respect the voices of their 2SLGBTQ+ students and community members. The pride flag symbolizes hope, dignity, respect, responsibility, and pride around the accomplishments the 2SLGBTQ+ community has made and continues to make. We must not forget that 2SLGBTQ+ students are five times more likely to attempt suicide or self-harm. They are four to six times more likely to require treatment from these attempts than their heterosexual peers. They are four times more likely to be homeless after they come out, only to face violence and discrimination in the shelter system.

For many, schools are their comfort zones. It is where their friends are, who, for some, are more like a family than the one they have at home. It is where they go to feel safe and supported. It is what stops them from becoming a statistic. The decision of the HCDSB disrespects all of those who have fought before, and the fight is far from over.

We as a community can show our support, acknowledgment, acceptance, and respect for 2SLGBTQ+ youth and adults in our community by displaying pride flags of our own. We have created a sign showing the Progress Pride Flag that you can display on your lawn in hopes that 2SLGBTQ+ students in your neighbourhood will see this as a sign of support and create hope for a better future.

All contributions collected will go towards covering the cost of these signs, with funds received beyond the cost donated to the Positive Space Network, a community based program that builds community and creates safer spaces for 2SLGBTQ+ youth ages 6-24 in Halton Region by creating youth-focused programming, providing mental health support and cultivating community partnerships. This organization is operated through ROCK Reach Out Centre for Kids, the largest accredited children’s mental health centre in Halton Region that provides a multi-disciplinary approach to the diagnosis, assessment and treatment of mental health issues for children, youth and their families.

There are 100 flags available at the cost of roughly $8.50 each to produce and will be sold for $10. If interest exceeds this number (hopefully it does!!), another order will be placed, and the fundraising goal will increase in kind. Your donation will reserve your sign(s) in your name.

Donations above the cost of $10 are strongly encouraged and greatly appreciated, as this will help us succeed in painting the Halton region in pride colours during June, showing our support for our 2SLGBTQ+ students, and generating a larger donation to the Positive Space Network via ROCK

Thank you so much for contributing to this project and showing your support to 2SLGBTQ+ members of our community!! We can be sure that our students will appreciate this gesture.
