Three short months ago she entered this world and completed the Mojstrovich family. She was everything they dreamt of and more. Maddie was so happy and healthy until one day she got sick. She became fussy, lethargic and was having a hard time breastfeeding. Which was completely out of character for her.
Eric and Brandy took her to the hospital where she was later admitted.
After ruling out Covid-19, Influenza A and B and RSV the medical team was determined to find a diagnosis.
Maddie was stable and then in a blink of an eye, Brandy and Eric were living every parent's worst nightmare. Maddie coded and they had to helplessly watch their baby fight for her life while the medical team brought her back.
Maddie was then sedated and intubated and has been since April 28, 2021. More tests were conducted and it was determined that all signs were pointing towards Infant Botulism. Maddie's case is extremely rare but has a great chance of recovery. It's a long road to recovery, but a full recovery is expected. Within the past 5 years, there have only been 2 other documented cases of infant botulism in Canada! There have been approximately 50 total cases documented in Canada.
An antitoxin was brought in from California for sweet Maddie. It came with a pretty hefty price tag which thankfully is covered by Alberta Health Care.
Brandy and Eric are the most amazing people. They are the type of people the world needs more of. They are the first to help people in need and would give the shirt off their back to help somebody. Now they are the ones in need of help. They are also the type of people that would never want to ask for help. I wanted to set up a GoFundMe for them to help relieve any financial stresses while Maddie is recovering. Her recovery is expected to take up to 6 months. I want them to be able to focus on Maddie and her recovery, rather than being worried about finances.
Maddie will have ongoing appointments and physio for the duration of her recovery. They encourage both parents to be present for the appointments and the recovery process. Eric will be required to take time off work and they will need childcare for their older boys during the appointments. So even though we are fortunate enough to live in a country where the initial treatment is covered, there are many other expenses associated with Maddie's recovery!
All donations are greatly appreciated. If you are not in the position financially to donate, sharing Maddie's GoFundMe is also extremely helpful!
The Mojstrovich's appreciate all the love and support! We will continue to provide updates on Maddie and her road to recovery.
