Run Moab240 for Buddy Check

54318116_1612141076151402_r.jpegMy name is Ryan Maskery, and I am a Victoria (BC) based runner who is attempting to run one of the longest endurance events in the world, the Moab 240 ‘Ultra Marathon’ across the desert in Utah. I will be doing this to raise funding and awareness for a mental health society called ‘Buddy Check for Jesse’.

The Moab 240 is a 240-mile (386km) non-stop footrace through Utah in the United States. On October 8th 2021 I will cross the start line at 6am local time. I have 112 hours to complete 9 consecutive marathons. Once I start, the clock will not stop until I cross back over the line days later. This is one of the longest and toughest races in the world. From blistering heat in the desert canyons to the freezing cold mountains, this will test my physical and mental strength in ways I have never experienced before. And I will be doing this for Buddy Check...

‘Buddy Check for Jesse’ is a program created in memory of Jesse Short-Gershman who lost his battle with Mental illness. It began with Jesse’s dad, Dr. Stu Gershman, wanting to help his other two boys feel supported and to make their teammates know how important mental health is.

We believe that sports coaches and athletes are in a unique position to share a message to help raise awareness about mental health issues in their youth participants. Our objective is to destigmatize mental health challenges and to empower and encourage youth and young adults to support one another. We believe that it is our youth that can help change the future and promote kindness, compassion, and tolerance in our communities. Hopefully, this will allow more individuals to come forward and receive the help that exists. Only then will our poor statistics and stigmatization of mental health challenges/illnesses be impacted in a meaningful way.

Your generous donations will be used for ongoing program development, resources for coaches and players, and to distribute materials including wristbands, bag tags, green tape and other items so players can demonstrate awareness, compassion, kindness, and unity.
