Ely and Shaheena both contracted Covid-19 in the beginning of March 2021. Shaheena is a nurse and Ely is an electrician in Surrey, the hot spot for the virus in BC. They are a hardworking couple in their early 30s who work outside the home and it is believed they were infected while working with the public. Four days after experiencing symptoms Shaheena, who was 7 months pregnant at the time, was having trouble breathing and Ely drove her to the emergency room at Surrey Memorial. She was quickly admitted to the ICU and put on oxygen. On March 11, after 2 days in the hospital Shaheena took a turn for the worse and they had to do an emergency C section at 33 weeks gestation. Shaheena was awake and was able to get a 3 second glimpse of her new daughter, Aaliyah, before her premie was taken to the NICU.

For 10 days Shaheena fought the virus in the ICU and was able to post about her experience as well as how much she is looking forward to meeting Aaliyah. Unfortunately, on March 21 her body was unable to continue to fight on its own. She was taken to the Critical Care Unit at Royal Columbian Hospital and put in an induced coma, ventilator and bypass machine. She was able to leave a voice recording for her daughter before being put in the coma. Ely plays it for Aaliyah every day so she can hear her mother’s voice. Thankfully, Ely has recovered from Covid and once he tested negative had been allowed to visit Aaliyah in the NICU every day. She was discharged on March 30 after 19 days in the NICU and is now at home with Ely, where they anxiously await Shaheena’s return.

Shaheena is still currently in an induced coma, on life support and fighting for her life. Ely is unable to visit her due to the strict Covid protocols of that unit but he faithfully calls her everyday and a nurse holds the phone to her ear so he can talk to her and encourage her.

As you can imagine, this has been a trying and draining time for Ely and Shaheena. Until Shaheena is well again Ely is the primary caregiver of Aaliyah (a premie) therefore he is unable to work. Once she wakes up, Shaheena will have a long road to recovery with months of rehabilitation and an uncertain timeline of when she will be strong and recovered enough to care for Aaliyah on her own.

We are humbly asking their family, friends and the community to please join us in blessing Ely, Shaheena & Aaliyah with financial support to help them through this time of hardship.  Our hope is to raise enough donations to provide for their financial needs for a few months. This will allow them to focus on caring for Aaliyah, in the midst of Shaheena’s ongoing health crisis and upcoming journey to full recovery. We ask you to help us remove the added burden of financial stress from their shoulders. Even if you are unable to donate, please keep their little family in your prayers and share the link with others. Thank you for your time and for reading their story. God Bless you!
