First of all, I am so glad you clicked on this link!
My name is Inez Neville, and my sister Jacquie and I are launching this GoFundMe campaign on behalf of our dear younger brother Stephen and his family.
For those of you who don’t know our family well, we were born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. At 19, Stephen moved to Toronto to pursue a career in music. He co-founded The Balconies, was the bassist, co-singer and songwriter, toured the world, played countless shows, and recorded five albums with the band. After 8 years, he decided to focus on getting his Master’s Degree, and he and his partner moved to Hamilton. Stephen is now 31, and a PhD student in Communication & Culture at York and Ryerson Universities studying privacy and surveillance issues of new media technologies. He has been working as a Teaching Assistant at York and a Research Associate with the Infoscape Lab at Ryerson.
On a personal level, Stephen is a great supporter of the Arts, he continues playing and writing his own music, enjoys a healthy debate, and has a great sense of humour. He and his partner of ten years, Amanda, have a five month old baby boy named Leo. Stephen absolutely adores Amanda, and is an active and loving father. Amanda is also a student and a figure skating coach, but she’s had to put both of those endeavours on hold to care for Stephen and Leo.
Several weeks ago, Stephen was feeling unwell, and, after waiting to be confirmed negative for Covid, was treated for strep throat. After a week of antibiotics, new symptoms began to develop and his condition worsened. At the recommendation of his family doctor, he went to the hospital, where he was diagnosed that same day with Acute Myelogenous Leukaemia (AML). Doctors were proactive and rushed him into immediate treatment. He began chemotherapy the next day, and spent over a week in the Intensive Care Unit due to infection and the progression of his illness. He is currently continuing his treatment at the Juravinski Hospital in Hamilton.
Short-term, Stephen will require a stem cell transplant, and doctors are on the hunt for a match right now. (On a related note, please consider becoming a stem cell donor if you are between the ages of 17-35; you never know who you might be able to help: visit the Canadian Blood Services site for more information.) Our entire family is so grateful to the expert medical team at the Stem and Cellular Therapy Unit, as well as all of the other staff who are taking such great care of our brother.
So many of our friends and family have expressed their desire to help in any way possible, so we are launching this fundraiser. Stephen is not only our much loved brother, but also our dear friend, and is precious to many others. It’s likely Stephen won't be able to return to work at full capacity until early 2022, and we hope this fundraising effort will help him focus on his recovery, and alleviate some of the stress associated with worrying about his family and their finances.
Your support, in any way, will help the family to cover expenses like preparing the home for Stephen’s outpatient treatment, living expenses such as housing costs, groceries, parking at the hospital, cleaning provisions, and supplies for their growing baby, among other things.
The road to recovery is long, but we remain positive that Stephen, who does nothing in half measures and is extremely determined, will beat this. Thank you all for your love and support.
