On July 25th 2020 our little fighter, Walker John Richard Hopson, began his journey.
Walker came into our lives in a whirlwind, making his own surprise entrance to this world via emergency c-section. Before Shanine knew it, Walker was being swept away to the BC Children’s Hospital. With Myles in Alberta working, he jumped in the vehicle and drove straight to Vancouver to be by Walkers side.
Walker was born with one kidney, he had an imperforate anus (non-existent) – so he cannot eat as he cannot pass bowels; he’s on an IV lifeline. His ribs on one side are fused together, and he has a curved ‘S’ shaped spine. He has one lung smaller than the other, therefor having difficulties breathing, so is on an oxygen supply. We have been informed that Walker may have something genetically wrong with him. Saying this, doctor reports remain hopeful at this time.
Just days into his life, Walker had a brain, neck, spine and pelvis MRI under anesthetic at 11:30am. At 3:00pm he went in for his first surgery to cut into his intestines and create a colostomy bag so he can start to receive milk and pass his bowels. In 3-4 months Walker will have surgery to fix his imperforate anus and the colostomy will be reversed.
It’s truly amazing how much this little tiny soul has endured. Our little fighter, along with his mom and dad by his side, is holding strong.
This page has been created out of love for the Hopson-Okrainetz family. If you know them, or know of them, they have probably touched your lives in some way. For many, they are an extension of their family. Walker will have a long road to recovery, with the length of his hospital stay unknown, and intensive and costly visits to the coast to follow. As Walker progresses, we are looking to friends and family to help support the Hopson-Okrainetz family.
Please note that any funds raised that are not used will be donated to the BC Children’s hospital NICU.
If you would like to follow Walkers journey there has been a FaceBook page created, and the family will post updates:
